Up until the Spring of 2000, the Capitol 1000 was THE rally to ride in the Mid-Atlantic. Sadly, it ceased existence in June of that year. Several riders who had registered for the Cap 1000 decided to ride anyway; starting at the same place (we had reservations, shame to let them go to waste and all), but there wasn't really enough time to put on a proper rally. That's how the Mason Dixon 20-20 was born.
We had about 20 riders show up for a very grueling Saddlesore 1000 that featured nearly 300 miles of those squiggly little roads we so enjoy as riders. At our concluding feast, Jim Young suggested the event become a real rally and it should be done annually. This is odd, since the rallymaster had never even entered an LD rally at this point; nevertheless, he committed to giving it the old college try in 2001, over Memorial Day weekend. And did we; 95 riders in all, 400 bonus locations, a suicidal Ural, and numerous riders realizing that getting that last bonus in Gettysburg wasn't such a bright idea at 2 o'clock on Memorial Day Sunday. Everyone had a great time; Jim Young, who grew up in Coudersport, exclaimed that he was on roads "up there" that he didn't know even existed. Jim died later that summer during the Thin Air TT- he was 49. Jim is buried at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery; we visit him every Memorial Day to say "thanks for being a soldier, and thanks for making the Mason Dixon 20-20 the event it has become." And we miss him.
Since 2001, core staff has remained essentially unchanged; Todd "Harley Trash" Witte and Brent "Yuppie Scum" Ames decided to try their own hand at being rallybastards during 2002-2003. Dale Horstman, Leon Begeman, and Don Arthur joined our merry little band. The RallyBubbas are: Don Arthur- point proctologist; Leon Begeman- chief technical modification specialist; Louis Caplan- your cruise director; Dale Horstman- fashion consultant; Tracy Horstman- scout leader; Jean Miller- chief sorcerer; and, Rick Miller- janitor. Here's a write-up on Rick from the BMW^2 website.
